National Coalition of Independent Scholars

Fellow NCIS members are invited to join Dr. Melissa Sterry for an online lecture on Pyrophytic Architecture™: design for living with wildfire.

Pyrophytic Architecture™, a branch of Panarchistic Architecture, explores how we might learn how to live with wildfire from plants that already have. Mimicking their biochemistries, structures, behaviours, and systems, this paradigm proposes architecture as a dynamic, evolving process embedded in fire regimes. Grounded in ecological systems theory, it develops a taxonomic hierarchy of architectural and urban design concepts tailored to local wildfire conditions. Inspired by evolutionary entanglements between pyrophytes and wildfires, it’s an approach that reimagines resilient urban and peri-urban development for a world increasingly shaped by wildfire. From materials to structures, it advocates for adaptive, bio-inspired solutions for coexisting with wildfire in and beyond the wildland-urban-interface.

Those wishing to attend should look out for a link in the NCIS member site and newsletter.
